A year ago, doctors told his parents they didn’t think he would survive.
Shot once in the head in August 2014, by a gang member, San Bernardino police Officer Gabe Garcia had emerged from a coma paralyzed on one side and barely able to talk.
“I could only hear him talk through a hole in his throat,” said his mother, Lydia Garcia. “That was the greatest sound I’ve ever heard.”
His recovery, however, was well beyond what doctors expected.
